October 13/14 Alaska Board of Fisheries Meeting Update #1- Board Elects New Officers & More

The two day meeting kicked off on Tuesday morning with the following key items discussed:

  1. Election of Officers
  2. Committee & Task Force Reports
  3. Agenda Change Requests

The full agenda can be viewed here: http://www.boards.adfg.state.ak.us/fishinfo/meetinfo/2009-2010/Worksession/agenda-10-09.pdf Six of the seven Board members were present with M. Morris unavailable due to travel difficulties.  There were approximately 50 people in attendance including the public and ADF&G staff support. Department reports, public submissions and additional information are listed here: http://www.boards.adfg.state.ak.us/fishinfo/meetinfo/fcal.php

  1. Organizational Changes

New Chairman/Vice Chairman. The Board voted in Vince Webster as the new chairman and Karl Johnstone as vice chair for the 2009-2010 session. The vote for both gentlemen was unanimous.

Janet Woods assumed her role as the newest Board member for a three year term subject to confirmation by the Alaska State legislature. Woods, of Fairbanks, has subsistence fished, hunted and trapped in Rampart with her family since the early 1970s. She is currently employed as a pump station administrative assistant with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company and has also worked for the Yukon Flats School District. She attended Alaska Methodist University, Seattle Pacific College and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Distance Delivery Program. A copy of her resume/qualifications is here: http://www.boards.adfg.state.ak.us/fishinfo/member/woods-resume.pdf  and the original announcement in July: http://www.boards.adfg.state.ak.us/fishinfo/news/2009-2010/woods-pr-bof.pdf

  1. Board Committees & Task Force Reports

There are nine active committees/task force items and very little was accomplished over the past session. The primary reason cited was lack of budget funding. John Jensen reported that the task force on possession limits would commence shortly by contacting individuals for participation.

  1. Agenda Change Requests

Nine Agenda Change Requests were considered. Two items were of interest in Southeast:

#4 – Sablefish quota change - Defeated
#8 – Close specific areas around Juneau to sport fish catch of rockfish - Defeated

Both items were defeated unanimously. Items 1, 3, 6, and 8 were voted down and items 5, 7, and 9 were accepted. Item #2 was similar to item #5 so no action was taken.
